BRIAM, connecting Mediterranean musical traditions (Erasmus + project)
The BRIAM – Bridges Across the Mediterranean project aims to connect Mediterranean musical traditions through intercultural collaboration, education, and community engagement. Launched in 2024, BRIAM brings together partners from Spain, Greece, Belgium, and Turkey to explore and celebrate modal music heritage. An European initiative with the support of ERASMUS + programme.

How is Kopanica involved?
Kopanica was in charge of the first in-person seminar and of the coordination with international musicians.
The seminar took place in Anderlecht, in the Pavillon Rauter, in March 2025. Music professionals, amateurs, and students gathered for a beautiful and instructive two-day workshop with international masters of modal music. At eveningtime, the masters gathered for a concert of Modal Music.
Project objectives
- Intercultural Dialogue: Foster exchange among musicians, educators, and communities across the Mediterranean, focusing on modal music traditions.
- Educational Development: Create and disseminate educational materials, including scores, videos, and recordings, to support the learning and preservation of traditional music.
- Community Building: Establish ensembles like the Estoudiantina of the Cyclades to encourage local participation and cultural engagement.
Key Activities
- Online Seminars: Led by Labyrinth Catalunya, these virtual sessions delve into modal music and its contemporary applications.
- Estoudiantina of the Cyclades: A newly formed ensemble in Greece that performs traditional music and conducts educational activities.
- International Gatherings: Belgium hosts the first in-person seminar, bringing together musicians from all partner countries for workshops and performances.
- Collaborative Music Video: Participants will produce a joint music video showcasing the cultural connections within the Mediterranean through music.
Overview partners & responsabilities
- Spain: Project coordination and technical support via Labyrinth Catalunya.
- Greece: Establishment of the Estoudiantina of the Cyclades and development of educational materials via Music Steps Koinsep.
- Belgium: Organization of the first in-person seminar and coordination with international musicians by Kopanica asbl-vzw
- Turkey: Contribution to repertoire development and organization of joint educational activities.
